Aging is an important part of all human societies reflecting the biological changes that occur, but also reflecting cultural and societal conventions. Age is usually measured in full years ?[1] Aging is progressive, meaning change will continue and it is downhill from here. [2] Aging is a highly individualized matter. There is no single measure of how "old" a person is.[3]
Aging is not one process, but many, including: biological psychological, social psychological, and social aging. Aging has many possible outcomes, some positive and some negative. Aging is typically expressed as a maximum value in parts per million per year [ppm/year]. The rate of aging is typically greatest during the first 30 to 60 days after which time the aging rate decreases. Aging is a vital theme in the novel, and it is especially closely tied to time. All three protagonists show great horror at the aging of their bodies, and Marquez shows us countless other characters who become senile, lose their teeth, pass away, and feel deep shame at the changes in their bodies.[6]

Stem cell therapies are not the only method possible for replacing aged and damaged cells. Mitochondria, present in every cell of the body except red blood cells, are believed to have derived from bacteria that invaded more complex cells billions of years ago, bringing their own genetic code. They transform fat, sugar and oxygen into energy that can be used by the body.[24] Mitochondria are sometimes described as “cellular power plants” because they generate most of the cell’s supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. In addition to supplying cellular energy, mitochondria are involved in a range of other processes, such as signaling, cellular differentiation, cell death, as well as the control of the cell cycle and cell growth.[25]
Natural aging has also been studied in a more controlled way by the National Bureau of Standards, the National Testing Institute in Sweden, and a few researchers elsewhere. Paper is selected, tested, put away, and taken out at widely spaced intervals to retest.[27] Naturally occuring genetic variants in mice can delay aging, but only to a certain point. Therefore, even when we identify the genetic mechanisms behind human aging, curing aging will be an Herculean task .[28]
Humanity looks to me like a magnificent beginning but not the final word. Researchers at UCSF are spread throughout two large campuses, but the goal of working together is the same. Research on aging has been catapulted to the forefront of science rather than remaining a backwater. This development has come in parallel with an enormously increased capacity of the biomedical research community to handle complex biological problems in the laboratory.[48] Researchers are hoping it does the same in humans.
